"My grandfather's care in his final days of life"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Older people's healthcare Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Respiratory medicine

(as a relative),

The staff on the Critical Care Unit were phenomenal. Actually, all of the staff we met from the ambulance crew, to A&E, to resus, to Critical Care were amazing.

My granddad was a very stubborn man with a raging chest infection and so forced us to wait until he had become unconscious for us to call an ambulance.

Once at the hospital a respiratory consultant from CC sat myself, my Nan and my uncle down in a separate room to inform us that Papa in fact had septicemia and would likely not survive.

They did everything they could to fight the infection, and Papa woke up. Over the next three days, all of the staff we met could never do enough for us, allowing our family to grieve together and sit with papa for as long as we wished.

Unfortunately on the day he died, four days after being admitted, he had a massive heart attack and did not recover.

The whole process from chest infection to hospital was one week.

I was there as he passed away, and I will always be grateful that I had that opportunity. The staff were so supportive of our family. Thank you for allowing Papa a "good death".
