I have suffered this chronic pain for several years and feel that nothing has been resolved. I have visited the Pain Clinic 3 times over a long period. The first two were fairly short sessions and concentrated on methods of self help, relaxation and also the use of
CD's and a tens unit which I found was useful. I then lost my regular job because of sickness and am in financial difficulty. I want proper investigation into the cause of this pain, I have had only one X-ray when my kidneys bled 3 years ago which shows a blood clot in my ureta, and one MRI of my back a full 2 years after being knocked down by a car. (I also had a scan of my brain requested by my GP and told afterwards that although it does show impact injury I have no signs of Alzheimer's! which is what he was looking for!) I was told today's visit was going to be with a doctor who is a psychologist and it was actually with two psychiatrists who questioned me about my whole life from childhood and even asked if I heard voices speaking to me. After more than two hours I was told I am not psychotic and they would recommend anti depressants to relieve my anxiety. I have to say that if I knew what is the cause of it and could work for a full week and still be fit to do the same the following week I would not be almost destitute - this is what is causing distress. I can walk around as the pain is high on my back into my neck and shoulder regions so affects my arms and neck, I do have arthritis in my knees but that is bearable compared to the rest. Tonight I am in terrible pain because it took a huge effort to carry my bag and travel there and back by bus in freezing cold. They don't see the pain when it's at it's worst and because I am mobile, (double jointed/ hypermobile) I appear to be better than I am. I also think I may have been discharged which would be upsetting as previous visits were helpful. I feel that a full psychiatric investigation was overboard.
