"visit to my dad"

About: Sandwell General Hospital

On arrival to visit my dad who is 86 and has vascular dementia i had been informed he had been moved to another ward so headed up to the ward. When i got to my dad he was getting quite agitated and was pleased to see me. A member of staff approached me and asked if my dad was able to walk? it seemed that none of the paperwork done from other ward which took over an hour had been passed to this ward. I approached a member of staff to ask for an update on my dad, they were casually leaning on the wall looking around on my approach they looked me up and down in such a rude manner - i chose not to raise it as i had just walked in i asked them who i could see and they told me they were doing handover and would be out 'in a bit.'

On waiting for the handover to finish the staff were wandering round looking bored and apathetic with clearly nothing to do but with no interest in any patient whatsoever.

The nurse that i did track down after 40 mins was helpful and approachable but that was the only member of staff i could say that about. The other two i spoke to on separate occasions couldn't have been less interested and i had great difficulty in understanding any of the staff with heavy accents so i dread to think how my 86 year old dad is coping. His move out of this hospital cannot come quick enough for me. On entering i can genuinely say i felt i was in a foreign country, in the way and nothing short of a nuisance. The trained staff ie nurses are exceptional but your healh care assistants or whatever name they come under need are absolutely dire.

I am really sorry to hear your comments. If you could contact me directly at tobylewis@nhs.net and let me know which ward your father is on, I will talk to the team who are looking after him.

Thank you, Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
