"Being charged for a photo copy of my sick note"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

After being unable to work for a period of months due to having a heart attack I was left very disappointed at The Whinhill Medical Practice (Aberdeen) yesterday. I have had to get a medical sick note every month since the heart attack and was very disappointed when they wanted to charge me £1 for a photo copy of the sick note. They have not charged me before and I do not know if this is their policy or the NHS policy.

Dear Home Alone,

Thank you for taking time to post on Patient Opinion.

I'm sorry that this situation must have caused confusion for you at an already difficult time. I called Whinhill Medical Practice today, who have said that it is NHS policy not to photocopy sick notes. Once you have been issued with your sick note / fit note it should remain your property, but can be copied by your employer. If you wish to copy your fit note other than this - that would be up to you.

I understand that this is confusing as you have been given copies in the past without charge. The staff at Whinhill have said they would be more than happy to discuss any questions you have the next time you visit.

Kindest Regards,

Kirsten
