I was referred here by my GP as they had concerns about my ears and the waiting lists for the NHS were very long. On arrival one of the reception staff was booking me in and the whole while, the other sat on the reception phone to a friend whilst looking at instagram on a mobile explaining very loudly to the person they were on the phone to to look at different photos some unnamed person had posted. This really shocked me as it seemed so completely unprofessional, and frankly the rest of my time at this hospital proved my first impressions correct. When I was booked in and sat down the reception staff were talking loudly about their pet dogs and then all of a sudden they got up and began dismantling what must have been an 8ft Christmas tree in the middle of the day while patients on crutches were trying to pass through. There were baubles rolling across the floor and then some nursing staff came to help too which just was a bizarre sight to see and seemed inappropriate. Anyway, I was called in and had a hearing test as expected which was fine but when I went in to see the consultant I was completely gobsmacked at how little interest they managed to show for letting me explain the problems I've been experiencing. I went to sit by the desk thinking with them being a 'consultant' there'd be some kind of consultation, but I was clearly wrong. I was asked to sit in a big chair while they sucked some wax out of my ears and proceeded to explain they would have a look at this 'perforated ear drum' which I tried to explain wasn't what I had been referred about - but no sooner had I opened my mouth to try and speak the consultant started sucking the wax out and made it obvious they had no interest in listening to me. The consultant had a look in my ear and basically said everything was perfectly normal. I respected this comment but tried to talk to them about the issues I'd been having again and explained two GPs had been worried about a possible growth in my ear to which they smiled and replied 'yes I can see what they're looking at but it's absolutely fine'. There was no explanation offered to tell me what they had seen but just kept telling me everything looked normal and it was fine. I was offered no support or guidance other than being advised to 'pop' my ears when they feel blocked as if this isn't something I've already tried. I felt completely stupid as though I must be overreacting, even though the problems I've been experiencing have been completely debilitating at times recently, just to be told 'you're obviously just prone to these things' by this consultant. They made a few notes and immediately ushered us out the room and was already on the phone talking to someone else before we'd even gathered our coats to leave. I felt like I'd been dismissed and felt humiliated by this experience which has gone no way to helping me with my problems. We weren't with the consultant more than 5 minutes, if that. Will be returning to my GP now to discuss other options. Do not recommend Spire whatsoever!
