"Team work problems on ward"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / General medicine

(as the patient),

I would like to express my concerns and gratitude to some of the staff on Melly ward. Having been a nurse myself many years ago I am shocked at seeing first hand how "the greens" were treated with such little respect by their supposedly superiors " the blues".

Greens being "just hca's" while blues were clearly the nurses. I was saddened to see that several of the health care support workers were literally work/rushed off their poor feet. I witness this over several days that the HCA ' s carried out the bulk of the work.

I understand nurses have their jobs to do too, but how can they justify team work when from my experiance, their backdone of the ward being HCA, s are struggling to manage the work they are carrying.

During my stay I witnessed one HCA Leanne working with the utmost care and compassion I have not seen in a long time even asking us ladies if we would like our hair, make up or nails done, this I might add was to be done during her break.

As a trust I wonder how it is that some of the staff work so so hard while in my view, there are trained nurses sitting at the nurses desk chatting and not about work that much I can inform you of, do they not know what basic nursing care is?

I would love to include my name but I may have the misfortune to have to endure this ward again but on a positive note at least you have excellent carers, unfortunately in my view the nurse's are derogerty to their hcas and invisible to me as a patient!

A final well done to leaanne, Ali, john and lots of other "greens" your a real credit to you uniform and theNHS

Your obsrvations have been forwarded to the Ward Manager for action. Certainly the behaviour you describe is not good practice and I am sorry that this marred your experience.

kind regards Christine Longstaff on behalf of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust
