"Multi-disciplinary = Being passed around"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary / Pain Management

Attending Pain Management for three years, I continuously told them about my mood and feelings. Throughout this time I asked to speak to someone, onbeing sent to the pain management programme I explained I still needed to talk. This became a tangle between being seen locally or in Newcastle and went round in circles. Ending this I was finally told I'd seen their pain psychology people as part of the pain programme. In 2016, I go to see clinical psychology who refer me to pain psychology - who were never offered in all my three years of consultations. This is a place that passes you on rather than helps you manage your pain. Asking for things are seldom listened too andthis will affect your mood as it did mine no doubt. A lot of great minds who don't seem to know what to do. Not listening is definitely their biggest skill alongside passing you to someone else, who'll do the same. Less tick box and more help please.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on NHS Choices regarding Pain Management Services at the RVI. We would like to offer our sincerest apologies that our service has not met your needs, as we do strive to provide the highest standard of care to all of our patients and so value such feedback when this is not the case, so that we can pinpoint opportunities for improvement.

On occasions the Pain Team may identify patients who will benefit from a referral to a Pain Management Programme which is designed to offer patients a variety of options in dealing with the pain they are experiencing. For those patients who live outside Newcastle, approval from their Health Commissioners is needed to access this service and this may have caused the delay in accessing the Pain Psychology service. Regrettably, this is out of the control of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As the complaint is anonymous it is difficult to give specific feedback, but if you would like to contact the Patient Relations team with further details regarding your experience, they will be able to investigate this further and provide you with a more detailed response. They can be contacted on patient.relations@nuth.nhs.uk or if you would like to speak to someone, on 0191 223 1382.
