"Pathology angels"

About: St Albans City Hospital

My young son had been told by our doctor that he needed a blood test to rule out Glandular fever. We were told to go to St Albans City Hospital for 8.30am the next morning when Pathology opened. We arrived in good time but could have wept at the sight of 20+ people already waiting. It was then a bundle to the reception hatch when it opened to get registered (I think this could be managed slightly differently). When I got to the front, the helpful member of staff informed me that I could take a ticket, and my son would be seen, but they were running a warferin clinic that morning and those patients would be seen first. I could have cried, my son was really suffering and I had visions of waiting for hours. However, the wonderful nurses were so quick and efficient that we were seen within 30 minutes. The nurse who saw us was extremely friendly, put my 10 year old at ease and was done within seconds. They even drew a festive snowman on his plaster!

I explained that my doctor had said they would phone with results at 5.30pm and the nurse explained that results are usually ready within two hours so it shouldn't be a problem. What a wonderful service. The staf were cheerful, efficient, knowledgeable which cannot always be easy with a roomful of often impatient people. Most impressed.
