Speed of receiving surgery after referral

What could be improved

Nursing standards were appalling. Old lady was allowed to fall from trying to get out of bed despite repeated requests for the toilet over the course of an hour. She then had to have a check from the medics, x rays,etc accident form which all took way more time than toiletting her when she asked, not to mention the fact that she could have broken her hip.

Cleanliness was poor - unknown substance on wall behind locker.Only one nurse was ever seen washing hands although some used the alcohol gel. Blood on floor for three days.

Certainly no TLC from these nurses. As a nurse trained in 1983 and an ex ward sister I have no respect for these nurses. One trained nurse stood out from the rest as being very efficient, kind and knowledgeable but she made the others look very poor and I think that she will burn out as she seemed to be doing everything whilst the others were slacking. Too much use of care assistants means that trained staff are unaware and disinterested in the condition of their patients.

Really disliked the waiting room prior to surgery. It was cold and dull as all belongings had to be taken away on admission. Little to read & dreadful daytime tv blaring away. Did not help with pre op nerves and was a thoroughly horrid experience sitting in a hospital gown and dressing gown for five hours

I would also like to say that a friends father has recently been treated in hospital following an aneurysm. He contracted Norovirus whilst having to wait for a transfer to Southamnpton and this lead to him spending 3 months here. Although you did a great job of saving his life the winter vomiting was avoidable - there was faeces left on the floor and not cleaned for three days. Cleaning in general was superficial. In his case there were a number of accidents from being left too long after calling for the toilet. This is an affront to anyone's dignity and ultimately takes far more time to clean up and adds to the risk of spreading infection. If a patients calls for the toilet it is not right to leave them for up to an hour, especially with elderly people .

Medical care was excellent all the way through - all the dotors we came across were very good. There were some language difficulties but most were first class.
