Following a stroke my wife was admitted to Western General hospital where she was treated in the intensive care ward. Tests showed that she had a raised blood count due to lymphoma for which she was treated. The care at treatment my received at the Western hospital was faultless.
However, she was transferred to St John’s, she arrived in the afternoon and was left lying in a corridor. My wife was finally found a ward and her notes were located. The staff apologized for the fact that she had been left in a corridor but that did not help.
Whilst on the ward she was not allowed to use the hoist on the bed at night, the reason given was that it made too much noise and would disturb the other patients. This was rubbish as there were patients being moved all through the night. They did eventually allow her to use the hoist but it seemed as if they were determined to make her stay in hospital as difficult as possible.
This ward had 2 nurses and 2 carers during the night, for 22 patients, this did not seem to be adequate staffing to me.
My wife’s mobility was affected by the stroke, she received physiotherapy for this during the week but a lot of the good work and progress was undone because the physiotherapy was not available at weekends.
