"Great concern over cleancliness of bathroom facilities"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I went into the Tameside General Hospital on to ward 2, Orthopaedic with a fractured vertebrae. The medical and nursing care was very good and they were helpful and friendly.

It could have been cleaner, my locker was stained as was the lid of the water jug. My bed table was tacky. I never saw anyone use the disinfectant dispenser at the end of the beds. On the Sunday morning I went to use the bathroom. The assisted bathroom was inaccessible because of the commodes lined up in front of the toilet. The female bathroom was littered with toilet paper, and towels and sweet wrappers plus there were unpleasant stains on the floor. I told a member of the nursing staff who seemed concerned and I think went to clean it up. But, the situation really should never have reached this stage, should it?

The nurses were a little noisy on one particular morning.

Thank you for your kind comments about the medical and nursing care in ward 2, Tameside General Hospital. I am very pleased that you found the nurses and doctors helpful and friendly. I will forward your comments to the staff concerned - they will be greatly appreciated. When I first saw your comments in October last year, I asked the Matron for the area to look into and address your concerns. It is only recently that we have been able to post responses to comments made on this website, so I have not been able to reply earlier. None of the issues you raise are acceptable, and the ward staff including the cleaning staff, have been made aware of them. I agree that the situation should never have reached this stage, although in fairness to ward 2, which I visit regularly, this is usually very clean and tidy and is certainly a very well organised ward. I am pleased to note that the nurse responded positively when you raised your concerns. Patients and visitors should raise any concerns they have with the nurse in charge of the ward in the first instance. This helps to resolve a great many of these concerns. I am sorry the nurses were noisy on one occasion. Again, they have been made aware of your concerns. Thank you again for taking the time to submit your comments.
