"Burns not treated properly by A&E"

About: Poole General Hospital / Accident and emergency Salisbury District Hospital / Burns care

(as the patient),

I suffered third degree burns due to an accident in the home.

I visited the hospital for them to tell me I didn't meet the burns criteria to go to Salisbury Burns Unit. They popped my blister and bandaged my foot up.

The next morning when I woke up, my foot was swollen and I was unable to walk. I re-visited the hospital, they cut off my blisters and told me to make an appointment with my GP for a weeks time.

A week passed and I went to my GP. He stayed in the room with me for 40 minutes examining my foot, which at this point was causing me terrible pain and was swollen and red.

Immediately he referred me to Salisbury Burns Unit, where I had to stay for just under a month because my burn was infected and I required a skin graft.

The doctors at Salisbury were very good and told me that the skin graft might not be a 100% take. Luckily for me it was.

Thankfully the hospital have now renewed their burns criteria and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone in the future.
