"Ridiculous delay in receiving post op follow up"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Vascular surgery

(as the patient),

Through my GP (Torkard Surgery) responding brilliantly to a complex mix of symptom resulting from living with RRMS I was referred to Nottingham QMC Vascular Surgery department as a priority referral as the pains in my right leg that had severely restricted my walking to less than 100 meters without almost unbearable pain. A Doppler scan by one of the practice nurses identified a significantly lower pressure in the leg so much so that no pulse could be found in the foot without practitioners searching for several minutes. Vascular clinic appointment came through fairly timely and identified a blockage in the vessel in the abdomen leading to the femoral artery. After consult I agreed to an angiogram and possible angioplasty having understood the risks but also being advised I can walk in with pain and would hopefully leave running. Very soon followed the pre-op assessment appointment and date for surgery to be carried out by Intervention Radiology department.

All good until half way through the surgery they identified not only the area in the iliac but also an aneurysm and blockage to two further vessels - quite complex I was advised and so they would discuss with the vascular team at the joint meeting in a few days. The surgery ended, still had severe pains in legs and very cold foot.

Two weeks plus post op and after trying to speak to vascular team I had a call from PET Scan team who wanted to book me in for PET - very worrying as I had received no notification of request being made and most queries you make about PET point towards cancer. Got it resolved though and 3 days later I had PET. Results to be sent to vascular team doctor. That was late October. Not having heard anything back from them despite the apparent urgency and the severe pain when walking (advised to keep walking though and keep exercising as it helps - apparently) loss of sensation in foot two weeks later as I felt the pain was getting worse I call the team secretary office and was advised the results had not yet been discussed but would be at the next meeting on what would have been mid November.

One week later no response so further calls made, this time no phone answered and despite messages being left no return call. I am now six weeks (!) post-incomplete-op, in increasing pain and discomfort having done every thing asked of me and no one seems to want to call, write, text, e-mail, my god even a whisper would be better than nothing. The worry and stress this is causing myself and my family is significant. What started as a priority referral and then during the operation led to some very worried looking faces when the aneurysm was discovered, not having been picked up on previous scans, now seems to be being treated as a common cold may be treated. The initial problems of leg pains and significant reduction in ability to walk came on in May and escalated very quickly. Why therefore is nothing apparently being done and if it is why is no one communicating with me.

I’m very sorry to hear that our communication has been so poor and for the anxiety and worry this is causing you and your family. Something has clearly gone amiss here, which is not good enough. We will follow this up for you if you would be good enough to send me your contact details. If you wish to do so, you can reach the Vascular Surgery secretarial team on 0115 9249924 ext. 66060 or email james.finley@nuh.nhs.uk.

Best wishes,

Sarah Kennedy,
