What I liked

i was brought into hospital by an ambulance which arrived at my home exceptionally fast at which time i received immediate pain relief. the Drs and nurses within A & E were excellent, the assessment and treatment was thorough, the rapport between pt/nurses/drs was very respectful and they appeared to work well as a team, this was a great model for the student nurse who was assisting.I was then transferred to ward 7 and met and reassessed by a very busy but very nice nurse who was kind, professional and non judgemental.

The night staff were generally superb, the male nurse who i cannot remember his name was exceptional, pain relief was his 'speciality', i never needed to ask more than the once, he was patient, encouraging and professional.

What could be improved

No real issues with the A&E dept,except it seemed like an age from the ambulance dropping me off until assessment and the need for more pain relief, after this they were superb. The auxiliaries on ward 7, and a couple of the older nightshift staff dare i say, had less patience. Despite being in alot of pain and groaning as the pain intensified,aswell as feeling woozy and sick after having regular pain relief with no anti-emetic, i was told to keep quiet as other people were trying to sleep, i couldnt help it. In jest i suggested they put me in the broom cupboard to which she interpreted this comment as a request to be transferred to a side room which i was hastely told that no side rooms were available, i wasnt ill enough. The medical staff were elusive to say the least, seeing the consultant and his entourage only twice during the admission. The impact my admission had on me psychologically was overshadowed by an exciting new procedure which had been carried out in the next bed along. There was no holistic assessment, no-one asked about how i had managed at home prior to my admission and who i had at home to support me after the admission, and was there anything i was worried about and needed answers about?

The medical information gathered in A&E and then presented to the consulatnt was not entirely correct , like a 'chinese whisper'. I asked for help to get my lifestyle back on track, and for couselling regards a bereavement that i had difficulties coming to terms with.

From beingI admitted early Thursday morning and had eaten nothing since Wed evening, this was due to different Drs giving differnt advice at different times, yet at the time of my discharge 2 days later (which i suggested, as it was mothers day the following day and didnt want my children upset any longer as my youngest child was showing signs of stress as she has a separation anxiety disorder even though i still wasnt well enough in my eyes), i was discharged home.

The handovers that are carried out by nurses during a shift changeover walking around the ward are there for anyone else to hear
