What could be improved
Attitude to breastfeeding and the enormous benefits of mothers' milk to a prem baby were not recognised - benefits were ignored, derided and dismissed.
The family's reasonable wishes weren't treated with dignity or respect. Compassion for a vulnerable mother was non-existent.
Breastfeeding was successful but mother was discouraged from continuing, and in the end was forced to give up by poor actions, attitudes and ineducation of staff about human milk (including a 'specialist breastfeeding-trained nurse'!).
A shocking state of affairs which I can't just do nothing about.
This PCT must up their game when it comes to valuing and understanding human milk, and emply supportive staff who are properly-trained for all aspects of human milk (eg. IBC Lactation Consultant for prem babies, recognised (expert)breastfeeding counsellors on the ward 24/7 or close to it).
