"Expensive car parking for blue badge holders"

About: Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

(as a carer),

A recent visit to the RO hospital in Northfield as a driver for a disabled patient I was charged £3. 30 for 1hr 20 mins with a Blue badge displayed, I have used the QE frequently this yr and MY Blue Badge use has given me free parking, Both hospitals are NHS, Im doing another visit to your RO in the near future and will be wanting to know why you charge your mostly disabled patients with Blue Badges when its free elsewhere at NHS places, Think shame on yourselves Royal Orthopedic Hospital, Northfield

Hi Hazel,

Thanks for your feedback.

Previously we offered blue badge holders free parking in the designated bays which could only accommodate 20 vehicles with no time limit. Unfortunately we did have occasions where patients were unable to get free spaces as they were in use.

After careful consideration it was decided to enable all blue badge holders to have access to a concession, whether they are in a disabled space or not, and that the hospital would introduce a charge for parking. This has eased some of the pressure on parking spaces. It is also worth noting that for those patients attending the hospital on certain benefits, they can reclaim car parking charges/travel costs.

I hope this helps explain our decision. Please be assured that all monies received are reinvested into making the car park more secure and also patient care.

Best wishes

Sally Xerri-Brooks
