I fell off my bike a few weeks ago & cut my knee. I was otherwise fine but the wound was dirty & I had fallen on gravel so I went to A&E. I saw a very inexperienced Dr who apologised for not knowing the ropes. I asked for an orthopaedic opinion but was told it was not necessary. There was an attempt to clean the wound and then it was stitched up. I asked whether prophylactic antibiotics were warranted.
Four days later I was admitted with a serious infection, I went to theatre and then had 5 days bed rest & IV antibiotics. The wound required packing & dressing every other day for 3 weeks and then every 3-4 days for the next 3 weeks. During this time, 10 days after discharge I was diagnosed with a DVT. I am on anticoagulants for 3 months.
I think my treatment must have cost tens of thousands of pounds and the whole episode was entirely preventable. I am very cross that an inexperienced Dr was put in that position and was not adequately supervised.
