"Waited 9 hours for surgery followed by..."

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / General surgery

After receiving a 7.30am appointment for specialist surgery on my broken elbow, I was left sat in a waiting room with no pain relief, food or water and in huge pain and discomfort for 9 and a half hours, after being asked to fast from the previous evening. There is absolutely no communication between staff and patients - only to tell you when you ask that there are no beds so to continue waiting for many more hours in the uncomfortable waiting room. After going in for surgery, I cannot fault the anaesthetic team and surgeon - they were fantastic. However, as soon as I got onto the ward that changed. Staff were rude, unfriendly and couldn't have appeared any less like they wanted to be there. I was in absolute agony after a big operation and they would only give me codeine every 6 hours despite being allowed it every 4-6. I didn't even get this if I didn't remind them and it wasn't kept on top of if they were busy. Sometimes I would go 7 hours without the pain relief. If I dared to ask politely for some help, I was told that everyone wants pain relief and I would have to wait my turn. Since when did levels of care become so poor that you are kept like animals in a waiting room for 9 hours before surgery? And since when did levels of care become so poor that you have to do the nurses' job for them with regards pain relief? Since when did they not keep on top of it so that you weren't in absolute agony every 6-7 hours? Disgusting and diabolical. My first time at the hospital and I couldn't be more disappointed. Almost as disappointed as the hospital should be with itself and its own systems.

Thank you for your feedback. We were very sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope when you were admitted to the Elective Treatment Centre at Manchester Royal Infirmary. It is important to us that all comments regarding patient experience are communicated to the staff involved and viewed as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comments, we are in the process of reviewing our practice on the Unit regarding patient admission and aftercare and as part of this we will ensure that patients who are delayed in going to theatre are not left without pain relief or nourishment.

Unfortunately, around the time of your admission the hospital was caring for a higher number of patients than is usual and as a result there were delays in some patients accessing treatment in the department. We were also very sorry to read that you found the staff to be uncaring after your surgery and would like to offer our apologies. Your concerns have been raised directly with the staff in the department so that lessons can be learned and we can ensure that others don't experience the same issues as you did.

Due to the anonymity of NHS Choices, it is difficult to provide you with a detailed and personal response to your post. If you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO16/0243.
