"Armed Forces Covenant"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / Pain Management

My son was seriously wounded in Iraq and had a spine stimulator fitted in the pain clinic because of the serious pain he is constantly in. About six weeks age the stimulator appeared to malfunction causing a return of severe pain. he phoned the pain clinic and left his details on an answer machine the message said he would be called back no such call was received. I phone to speak to some one senior I pointed out that under the Armed Forces Covenant seriously wounded military personnel who are more than 80% disabled, My son is 100%, are supposed to be fast tracked and given special consideration. I was told that some one would phone which they did and said an appointment would be made for two week time, that never arrived. I phoned again and spoke to a very disinterested person who said that my son would be seen at the next available appointment and that no one should have given a date for his appointment over the phone. When i pointed out the terms of the Covenant I was told the next available appointment was on November the second. I gave up then and my son who is like he is through service to his country has to wait another three weeks to be seen. It seems that while the Government is trying to ensure seriously disabled military personnel are properly looked after by the NHS it appears that some of the staff either do not understand what is required or cannot be bothered. I will be taking this matter further with my M P and Armed Forces minister and if necessary with the national press it is not right that seriously disabled ex military personnel are treated this way. Needless to say I am not impressed by the way my son is being treated and have to presume that this is happening to other ex military personnel in the same circumstances.
