"I was treated like a drug-seeker"

About: Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I suffer from SOD Sphincter Of Oddie Dysfunction. This is very painful and I take many high strength controlled drugs to try and alleviate the pain. It was obvious that the junior doctor had absolutely no idea as to why I was there. I was speaking normally even though my pain level at that time was a 7 to 8, because I have this pain every day you learn to live with it. My pain threshold had scored well over 10 when I was at home and continued to get higher even after taking my medication.

It then became apparent that he thought I was only there for more drugs, this is not the case. I wanted them to see if there was something else that would relieve the pain instead of not taking opiod medication, we agreed on IV Paracetamol which has worked well for me in the past. They had already given me iv morphine without asking if I was wearing a morphine patch or if I had taken morphine. They were ready to discharge me as soon as my drip had finished (fluids for dehydration) until a nurse had to tell them I had to stay for 2 hours because of the morphine. They then said they would get the paracetamol iv set up whilst I was waiting. Over an hour later the doctor came onto the ward just as I was taking 2 tramadol as I was getting strong pain again, they asked about the paracetamol, I said what paracetamol? They looked embarrassed, it also came to light that when they moved me they turned off the drip to hydrate me as quickly as possible so for over a hour that I was on the side ward I was not getting any fluids at all.

The nurse spoke over me, and also shouted at an elderly patient that they were dealing with something more important than her as they were sat at the desk doing a change over. This was absolutely appalling behaviour as the patient has said politely that it was really important that she spoke to her. All in all I went home feeling worse than when I was admitted, The 2 ambulance ladies on the other hand were asking lots of questions about my condition and how it affects me and what the pain levels are like, I replied child birth without any pain relief even after taking everything prescribed. They said How do you live every day with pain like that? at last someone with a bit of compassion!
