"My grandmothers inpatient care"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

Recently me nanna in Newcastle had a fall. She was on the floor alone for hours before family found her.

She broke her finger and wrist and she had a bleed between her brain tissue and her skull. She was left very fragile and unsteady on her feet.

She stayed at Rake Lane hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. My family and I all think she has been discharged far too early. She is not medically fit to be back in the community.

If it was the staff members family they would not expect them to go home so soon.

Dear Ali12,

I’m very sorry to hear about your Nanna, it sounds as if she’s been through a lot and that understandably your family are worried about her.

Please be reassured that when a decision is made to discharge a patient from hospital plans are also made to ensure that they have the appropriate support that they need at home. Clearly you do not believe that this process has been well managed in your Nanna’s case, as you feel she was not medically fit enough to have been discharged, and I am very sorry that your family have been caused this anxiety.

I would like to look into this further for you. With your Nanna’s permission could you please email her details to Patient.Experience@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk so that I can contact the ward on which she was being cared for, in order to look into her case in more detail.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Jessica
