What I liked

I was admitted to Leicester R.I. for reconstructive breast surgery following a bilateral mastectomy which was performed in 2007 at Lincoln County Hospital. Before the operation I had opportunities to meet my surgeon, and to ask questions. He was understanding and gave me time - I was very probing about his experience and capabilities and he respected my concerns and answered my questions very honestly. The operation went well and staff on Kinmonth Unit monitored me intensively at first. They showed me kindness and respect, reassuring me and explaining what was happening. Infection control procedures were A1 - better than I have seen anywhere. I needed a doctor's intervention twice during the night during my stay and was impressed by the concern and caring attitude they demonstrated, even after being called out in the early hours! I was encouraged to recover at my pace and actually enjoyed exploring the hospital in my pyjamas with a patient 'colleague'. We found a lovely old chapel and enjoyed the freedom of wandering and visiting cafes in the hospital. As an outpatient, I was seen quickly for dressing checks and further minor procedures. My surgeon has always given emphasis to how I feel about the result of the operation which is much nicer than focusing only on the physical outcome. I have visted the Maxillo Clinic as part of my treatment and, again, have been seen quickly and treated with respect. I have always been able to seek advice and have had minimal waits at clinic appointments. I cannot praise all of the staff highly enough for their professionalism and willingness to treat me as an individual. I like going back to Leicester R.I. because it has been a good experience for me.

What could be improved

The food could be more appetising but I am aware that anaesthetic affects my appetite to some extent. I always wonder why it is that hospitals, the very places where we need to build up our strength, offer food that is bland and unappealing. The parking situation is not good but has been relieved to some extent by a couple of car parks that have been opened locally. The Kinmonth Ward has a small room for patients to watch television and this would benefit from additional, and more comfortable, seating. Rooms on one side of the ward were cold because the air conditioning seemed to blow constantly.

Anything else?

My experience of Leicester Royal Infirmary has been positive and is down to the caring and professional attitude of the staff. I was a long way from home while I was there but felt safe, cared for and secure.
