Response from Royal Bolton Hospital

Dear Mr Holt, We're sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction. Clinics can overrun depending on the number of emergency patients that come through on the day.

Also clinics can be very busy depending on how many doctors are in attendance.

All doctors are allocated patients but some patients take longer to treat than others which also has an impact on patient waiting times.

Once a patient is allocated to a consultant the patient normally remains with the consultant and can be seen by any one of the doctors that belong to the consultant team. In your case all the doctors present were doctors who work in your consultant's team -- they were not other consultants.

We can confirm that in this case the cancellation was due to the lack of a post-operative bed due to bed pressures in the rest of the hospital as well as the absence of an operating department technician to assist in the theatre.

We apologise for the concern this caused you, but sometimes these things happen at short notice and we must ensure the safety of all our patients.

When a patient is cancelled the admissions team let the secretary know who then gets the consultant to re-list depending on urgency of the case. The appointments are then rebooked in chronological order of the listing date. Our bookings team contact the patients to ensure that the patient is able to attend the proposed date. We understand that you have now been rebooked.
