"12 week scan"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / Maternity

Our first experiences of the Early Pregnancy Department were excellent- caring, friendly, supportive and reassuring staff. However, on 29th September, my husband and I went for our 12 week scan. Unfortunately, we were shocked by the treatment of the sonographer: the foetus was very still, so they complained that it was sleeping and said it was a 'naughty child' repetitively as they couldn't take the measurements they needed. The sonogrpher went on to say they hoped it would be better behaved when it's born or we'd have a hard time. Not at anytime did they let us know that our foetus had a heart beat and was healthy- just said 'two little legs'. We weren't told anything to reassure us that all was fine. On exiting the scan, they said, 'Was it a donor egg?' and needed our egg collection and transfer dates which we'd handed over to their records weeks before therefore couldn't just 'recollect' instantly. After the scan, we were then met by the midwife, who told us they had to sort our paper work and it took a long time to do, so we might as well go over to the pathology department while we waited- they told us nothing about our scan and had very poor explanation skills in even telling us anything about the blood test needed. At the pathology department, I was shocked to find the member of staff commenting that they hoped I didn't smoke - I thought it was in relation to being pregnant but they then went on to comment on my surname being 'fagg' and wouldn't it be funny if I did smoke. They also noticed that I was a teacher and said they thought the children would find it hilarious. How completely inappropriate and shallow-minded - I actually commented back that only 'rude adults' make comments and children don't make judgements and know that names are passed down and tend to have other historical meanings. On returning to the maternity department, we were met by a different midwife who was very professional, caring and clear in their explanations. It was only on leaving, that we realised that we still hadn't been told anything about our scan and just hope that all is fine.

I am sorry that your opinion of the Early Pregnnacy Unit has deteriorated and futhermore you found the comments made by the pathology department staff to be wholly inappropriate. i have forwarded your comments to both the maternity and pathology department management team to take forward. If you would like to discuss the results from the 12 week scan please contact PALS on (024) 7686 5550
