"Huddersfield- long wait, small waiting room."

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Kirklees Sexual Health

(as the patient),

I thought that the length of the wait for the walk in sexual health clinic was terrible. The waiting room is no bigger than my bedroom and not very private. You are sat in a waiting room with people waiting for contraception. I have tried to come to the clinic before but had to leave due to the wait time being over 2 hours. I also find the clinic very unfriendly to the LGBTQ community. The first time I came to the clinic months ago I ticked the option of a peace of mind check knowing that previously this included a full sexual health screening. When I walked into the room they wasn’t going to do a full sexual health check even though I had put on the form that I am gay. As a gay male I expect a full sexual health check, blood, swabs & urine.

I feel due to the length of the waiting times, the times that you can book an appointment are not convenient to those who work or study full time, and the waiting room isn't very private. I also feel that nervous people that have never been to a clinic before will be scared away.

On arriving at the clinic where was 8/9 people in the waiting room, I asked how long the wait will be the response was that they didn't know, and they had one nurse and one doctor on that day. I replied that it would be a long wait, to which they responded that one nurse was good enough. Whilst there many people came in and the first question they asked was the waiting time, this is clearly a massive concern and a well known one that there is a large wait time. People are leaving due to the waiting period being so extreme. After being there for an hour, the estimated wait was still 30min or more depending on their needs.

Thank you for posting this feedback. We are aware of the problems at Princess Royal around waiting times and privacy. We have plans in place to rectify this and expect the situation to improve over the coming weeks. We are in the process of recruiting and hope to have the positions filled shortly, we have added two new clinics at Princess Royal Health Centre and we are looking at options to create a more private area in the reception.

I am sorry our service has not met the standards you expected but I would like to reassure you that we are working hard to resolve the situation.

Regards

Sarah

Update posted by Do it for him - Not for HIV (the patient)

Hi, thanks for your response. This issue has been going on for months, However I will be popping back in to check things have improved.

Maybe you should ask what people want and discuss plans with people. Secondly I would recommend that you split contraception and sexual health into two different locations as I don't think it's suitable or safe to have children that have come with their parents with people that have come in just for a sexual health check.

Finally as a person a part of the LGBTQ+ community I would recommend you offer a instant HIV test when you come for a sexual health screening. Two weeks to find out the results is lengthy and the old sexual health service always offered instant HIV tests.
