"Pleased with treatment apart from Occupational..."

About: Basildon University Hospital / General medicine

I was an in-patient at Basildon Hospital for 5 days in July, and found nearly all of the staff, from the most junior role to the most senior role, to be friendly, polite, caring and efficient, and of course extremely hard working, in often difficult circumstances.

I am disappointed that under the "Dignity and respect" heading (above) I have only been able to give 2 stars, when this refers solely to certain members of the Occupational Health staff that I encountered during my stay.

I have thought long and hard before saying anything negative about anybody, but two physiotherapists I encountered during my stay could certainly do with some re-training, in my opinion.

Their approach to checking how well I could walk and climb stairs was hectoring, to say the least, and verged on the bullying (as I told them at one point).

Their sole aim seemed to be to force you to do what they felt you should be able to do, not what you realistically could do, and I would like to tell them that most people - and older people included - do not appreciate being spoken to as though they are not in control of their thought processes, nor does a hectoring manner help.

I could mention more, but won't.

I am pleased to say I am now fully recovered - but no thanks to their intervention.

Thank you for comments following your stay in Basildon Hospital.

Your feedback is very important to ensure learning and service improvement.

Thank you for your positive comments about the majority of staff involved in your care and treatment.

We are sorry, however, to hear that you felt the occupational therapy staff did not afford you the dignity and respect that is expected or our staff.

Your comments have been shared with the department to address all these issues with the staff as appropriate.

We are pleased to hear that you have now recovered and wish you all the very best for your future good health.

Thank you once again.
