"Demise of my father"

About: Queen's Medical Centre / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

How I wish I could turn back the clock. If I could I would never have let my father through the doors of this dreadful place.

For nearly 4 weeks I watch his decline, from a person who had previously been able to be independent, within 48 hours he was practically a vegetable and was certainly treated like one by the staff.

The doctors we came into contact with seemed clueless with regards to my father - from looking at his symptoms, with hindsight, it seems obvious what the problems were, but they professed to be mystified by his symptoms.

The nursing staff who attended him were unbelievably unprofessional, cold. Uncaring, loud and aggressive if challenged. From what I could see, other old people on that ward were treated with the same disdain, but they weren't all my father.

I will feel guilty for the rest of my life that I left him to suffer in that place. He should have been out in 3-4 days and gone in to respite care. Instead he died alone and ignored and came out in a box.

I will never, never, ever, let anyone I care about be admitted to this place again. I believe they are still operating the outlawed Liverpool Care Pathway, which I believe basically kill your relatives off if they are elderly, as if they are doing you and them a favour.

A dreadful, dreadful place.
