"Care at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

Good afternoon,

I am writing to share my experience at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital in September.

Prior to going into hospital I had heard all sorts of rumours - poor staffing levels, bad facilities etc. Having never before been in hospital, I was a little anxious. As such I thought it even more important that I take the time to write and say what a wonderful experience I had...

Having spoken to some really wonderful midwives on the phone, We arrived at the MLU in the small hours. I laboured there for some hours before being transferred to the Labour Ward. I received an epidural, various drugs following that plus extra checks on baby. Ultimately my baby girl was born by caesarean. She weighed 10lbs 9 3/4 oz...! I was then in Summerhill ward until the Tuesday.

I had very much hoped for an undisturbed birth but it wasn't to be. However, I must say I had a hugely positive birth experience regardless of the route. The staff in the hospital - midwives, doctors, anaesthetists, nurses...every single person I met was incredibly professional, kind and treated me with nothing less than love. Every step of the way I felt empowered and very safe. I honestly can not thank the team enough for everything they did. It's difficult to put into words what an impact these people have had on me.

The aftercare I then received was equally as loving. I was shown such patience as I struggled to feed my baby and recover after the surgery. I thank the team there for all of their advice and guidance.

I will never forget the wonderful people who helped me...I remember every face but I'm afraid I struggle to recall all of the names-Moira, Jamie, Christina - 3 of the Superhero midwife team who looked after me personally during the birth. But I do hope my appreciation can reach every one of the team. I hope that the staff will recognise my case and know who they are. Thank you so much team.

I am about to post on the various pregnancy Facebook groups I am a member of. Everyone needs to hear about my experience and be reassured that Aberdeen Maternity Hospital offers the best in care.

Thank you so very much for all of the love.

Dear Lady M

Many congratulations on the birth of your baby girl. I am sure you must be very busy so I am especially grateful to you for sharing your experience on Patient Opinion. Your story will be very reassuring for all expectant mums. Staff at AMH will be absolutely delighted to hear of your feedback and we will do our best to ensure that all the people who mattered to you during your stay are made aware of your praise.

Reading words like, “wonderful”, “positive birth experience”, “professional”, “kind” and “patience” make us all feel so proud of the service we provide, but it is your use of the word “love” that really hits home the impact our staff can have on the experiences of new mums in our care. It is one thing loving your job, but to make people feel loved is truly amazing. I am so glad our staff were able to look after you in such a person-centred and caring way.

Many thanks again for your feedback and good luck with your little one.

Kind regards,
