A regular surveillance colonoscopy. Usually done in Edinburgh, but this time sent to the Regional Endoscopy Unit in Dunfermline Queen Margaret.
The experience was different - as QMH is not an acute hospital, everything was much quieter and calmer, and there was less waiting around, because the list doesn't get interrupted by emergencies. The consultant was the ideal of the modern physician/surgeon - warm and friendly, and also efficient in discussion. I'm - sadly - a very experienced patient, but I'm sure even a new patient would have been put at ease.
As for the procedure itself, it passed without incident. The consultant did say that he wasn't very used to patients with no sedation, and perhaps that showed - it's nice to be explicitly warned just before he has to push hard round a tight bend!
Having had no sedation, post-procedure was simply the usual - and appreciated - sandwich and mug of hot sweet tea.
"Warm and friendly consultant"
