my brother was admitted to the u c d department from the a and e. he was not offerd a drink until 2p. m..that was a small cup of tea. we had to ask for a jug of water for him. the next drink made available to him was at 7 p. m. in the evening. We had to make several visits to the main building of the hospital to Costa coffee to purchase hot drinks for him in order for him to drink plenty as instructed. Patients without visitors did not have this option and were left with only water allday.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your brother’s care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. We are disappointed to hear that he was not offered drinks regularly as there are clear procedures in place to ensure patients receive enough drinks throughout their stay. As a minimum standard 7 drinks rounds are completed during the day; one at each mealtime as well as others in-between.

If patients would like a drink outside these times we encourage staff to provide drinks as required. Cold water should always be available at the bedside unless the patient’s clinical condition means they should not be drinking. As a result of your feedback we are reviewing how drinks are provided in the area that cared for your brother to ensure they meet the standard set. We are very grateful that you brought this to our attention.
