"The staff in Cancer care"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a relative),

What I liked

The staff in Cancer care

What could be improved

Medical admissions is a joke.On two occasions I have had cause to take relatives in with very serious conditions. The first occasion was for my wife and it took 5 hours before she was seen by a doctor. The second was for my aunt who was left sitting in a wheelchair for 2 hours and then took a further 4 hours to be seen by doctor . Both of these people had serious conditions and were left too long without proper care.(see below for details)

Anything else?

My wife had recently undergone a second course of chemo for breast cancer and because it affects the immune system was told in no uncertain terms that if she developed a temperature ,this was an indication of infection ,i was to phone the hospital and a bed would be available .Phoned hospital and was told bed was available and to bring my wife to Medical Admissions.Arrived at hospital and was informed that bed was available in ward as soon as my wife had seen doctor. The only treatment my wife received in 5 hours was a paracetamol tablet ,the staff on the desk were unhelpful and uncommpasionate about situation I was in .By the time doctors turned up the infection had spread and no amount of anti-biotics could save my wife. The second occasion was my aunt who was taken in because of a problem with her kidneys ,it took a shift change to get a nurse who seemed commpassionate about what she was doing and organise a bed for my aunt and do some tests .It was then a further 4 hours before a doctor was seen and treatment given.Since then she has been moved to a ward where it seems patient care is secondary. She is on oxygen and a drip at the moment both of which have come out on several occasions and it has been some time before a nurse has noticed this. As a visitor no information is available about what doctor is treating my aunt and what they think the problem is,as the only information given is by nurse reading aunts notes. This I do not find acceptable as my aunt is in no fit state to relay anything back to the family. All in all apart from the Cancer treatment and emergency teams I would not want to be taken into this hospital under any circumstances.
