"Expect cancellations and delays"

About: St Mary's Hospital / Gynaecology

I was referred here after having recurrent miscarriages and every appointment made was cancelled and then rearranges at short notice with no explanations given. This caused large delays to getting seen. When I finally did get seen I was told that all tests they had done were normal but I should not try to conceive again and instead I should go to clinic in Coventry (2 hours away) and pay £360 for some controversial testing. I have no idea what happens if this test comes back normal, whether I am supposed to start trying again or if I go back to get other treatment. Other issues were not mentioned such as my short luteal phase. Another thing is that my scan was in with all the pregnant women/couples. This was very uncomfortable for me.

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope in the Gynaecology Outpatients Department at Saint Mary’s. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment, we are sorry that you have experienced some cancellations of your appointment. This is due to a change in the Consultant availability and has required the rebooking of some clinics. We are sorry if you understood that we were instructing you to attend the non NHS-funded service in Coventry. It is important that we tell you about all treatment options and this is a service that is new and some patients have chosen to attend but is entirely optional.

We are very sorry that you felt uncomfortable being scanned where pregnant ladies are present, we do appreciate this can be difficult for some women. The layout of the department is such that unfortunately it is not possible to divide it into sub waiting areas for patients that have differing referral reasons. It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO16/0200.
