"Two visits within nine months"

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I have visited this ward twice - on Christmas Eve when my husband suffered a subarachnoid haemmorhage and today with my elderly father, who had suffered a fall. On both occasions (which occurred during the night/early morning) I have been highly impressed with the rapid response and intervention of all staff, from the front desk through to the doctors and nurses. Extreme professionalism, combined with compassion, has made unpleasant situations more bearable. My father, who has mild dementia in addition to other medical conditions, was calmed and reassured throughout. The ward manager, should be commended and feel proud of their staff for the support and service they provide.

Dear Moira,

This is a really lovely story of care to read - many thanks for sharing it with us.

I'm naturally delighted to hear that both your husband and your father have, at different times, received all the support that they needed from us, delivered in a timely way and with compassion. What a lot for you to go through as a family in a short period of time ?

I was especially pleased to hear that those caring for your father were attentive and respectful - we have invested heavily in training our staff in meeting the needs of people with dementia and delirium so its reassuring to know that these skills are evident to those using our services. I am sure the ward manager and her team will be rightly proud when they get the chance to read your review.

Can you confirm which ward it was in The Northumbria that you visited on both occasions - I'd like to make sure that the staff involved get early sight of your kind words - it will mean everything to them. My email address is annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk if you wouldn't mind passing these details on ? Thank you

with all best wishes to you and your family,

Annie
