"Fetal Anomaly Service"

About: BPAS Doncaster Clinic

I wanted to leave a review as I know how useful this information is when trying to weigh up your options and alleviate fears. When trying to decide what to do, it made such a difference to learn of other people's experiences.

My husband and I were expecting our first child. Heartbreakingly we found out our baby was very very poorly and were faced with the devastating decision to end a much wanted pregnancy. Our local hospital only offered a medical induction- I knew this was something I couldn't put myself through. I kept hearing that the medical induction was safer (more 'natural') than a surgical termination however I felt the mental health risk was far greater. I contacted BPAS and they were able to schedule my treatment for as early as possible- I was 16 weeks. It meant travelling some distance to Doncaster but I was fortunate that I was able to make travel arrangements and could be treated quickly. On arrival, my husband and I were placed in a waiting room with other women/couples and then shown to a private room. As I was 16 weeks, I needed cervix preparation before the surgery which is 3 hours. My husband was able to stay with me the whole time until it was time to go for surgery. Even then he was with me when they were preparing me for the anaesthetic so I was grateful he was able to be with me right up to the last minute before going into the surgery room. I was really frightened but the staff were very kind and understanding, and did their best to reassure me. The staff at the Doncaster clinic were excellent and very sensitive to our situation. My husband and I are extremely grateful to BPAS (everyone I spoke to on the phone was so kind and helpful) and that such an invaluable service exists. If you are in a similar situation and feel unsure about which termination route to take all I can say is that I am relieved I took the surgery option and know in my heart that it was the right option.

I hope this is helpful.
