"Grandson born here after transferring from..."

About: Conquest Hospital / Maternity

My daughter gave birth at the conquest on 1st sept 2016. She had her waters break at home so we went into the eastbourne DGH for her planned water birth. Unfortunately 8 hours later meconium was spotted during an exam and we had to transfer over to the conquest under our own steam. It was her worst nightmare come true, she had to hobble out to the car through the corridors stopping to lean against a wall for her contractions with the world watching on and still leaking waters. It was difficult for her husband to concentrate on driving, she squealed at every bump and roundabout. We were all dreading the experience as had heard bad things about the unit at the conquest. Having safely made it to Hastings found they have an area right outside the mat unit door that you can park for an hour. The hobble inside was far less traumatic and the 3 of us were relieved when we were safely inside. From that moment on the whole experience was fantastic, a friendly face greeted us and showed us immediately to a waiting delivery room. In comparison to Eastbourne the rooms are huge and en-suite with a bide. Everything is already in the room you may need eg birthing ball. The room was very light and airy with 2 huge Windows, she was given a water jug straight away and within minutes her midwife introduced themselves. Labour then took its normal course but with a little intervention which meant no water birth as had to be constantly monitored. The midwife was with us almost constantly then until my grandson was born, the consultant had to be called several times and was with us at the birth . The consultant was very fast to arrive and was the kindest gentlest person you could wish to meet. Often they are cold and abrupt in my experience as they are so rushed, not so here as they immediately put you at ease with their friendly disposition.

The best of care continued after baby safely arrived and only then did the nurse go on a food break. The postnatal ward was just as good, large and comfy with lovely views of a lake. The staff there were happy and friendly and you at no time felt like you were a nuisance as can sometimes happen in hospitals. Mum dad and their new son came home the following evening after plenty of care attention and reassurance from all the staff, and paediatricians they came into contact with. Well done Eastbourne and Conquest, all is well thanks to the dedication you guys show. If you are worrying about going to the conquest don't it's fantastic.
