"Lack of availability of speech and Language specialist."

About: Crosshouse Hospital

(as the patient),

I have been referred for the Lee Silverman Voice treatment as my voice is affected by Parkinsons disease and this is a very effective way of improving it. I was seen for my initial assessment and home work up in June but told that a place on the intensive part of the treatment, which is clearly indicated for me, is not available for at least 3 months and probably 6, if at all, due to staffing shortages, reorganisation and funding shortages. No sign of the programme yet and delays continue so unable to fully benefit from the Treatment. This will have an impact on my ability to continue in my work which requires me to communicate verbally effectively.

Dear faidner,

The Lee Silverman Voice treatment an intensive, speciality treatment and is carried out by Speech Therapists, with special training. It is therefore not all Speech and Language therapists that can carry out this treatment.

It does seem such a shame that you may have to wait a while before you can benefit from this treatment but unfortunately there is a waiting list due to its specialist nature and if anyone cancels, the next person on the list is offered the treatment, however, cancellations are infrequent due to the length of wait.

There is good news though

In the interim while you are waiting for your appointment, you can still benefit from other speech and language treatments and the wait is not as long. If you or a relative would like to contact S&L and ask for help from other treatments, they will see what can be done for you.

The number for Ayr Hospital is 01292 610555 (ask for ex. 14230) and for Crosshouse Hospital - 01563 827140.

I do hope you benefit form our S&L experts soon, I am sure it will help.

Best Wishes,
