What could be improved

My husband had to attend for a CAT Scan. The changing room is in same room as waiting area.There is no thought for the patients dignity,also after the scan he was placed in another waiting area where I joined him. This it seemed doubled up as a kitchen, because people where coming and going making tea & coffee.During this time another two patients joined us. An elderly gentleman who was 80yrs old had a canier put in his arm and a catheter inserted all in earshot of us. ( Thats how I know how old the gentleman was) Surely this isn't right. Afew months ago we went to Newark for a Scan the treatment there couldn't be more different. The patient was taken into another room had thier scan arrived back fully dressed and was even given a cup of tea, made out of sight I might add.Newark is a small hospital and can give that personal care why can't Kins Mill

Thank you for your comments which have been discussed with the Superintendent Radiographer in the CT Scanner Unit.

The CT Scanner Unit at Kings Mill was opened in 1988 and in 2007 had to undergo some changes within the confines of the department to provide a multi-purpose cannulation area/patients waiting area. Prior to this both inpatients and outpatients waited in the same area and there was no facility to cannulate a patient in readiness for their scan.

The Superintendent fully agrees with you in that the area in the unit at Kings Mill is not ideal however she is confident that staff are aware of maintaining patients dignity. With this in mind staff only ask patients to change when absolutely necessary, always provide a gown and never ask a patient to remove all their clothing.

Since 1988 working practices have significantly changed and the staff now have to ask patients to wait for 20 minutes following their scan with the cannulation in place. As a courtesey if a patient wishes then their accompanying relative or friend can wait with them in the cannulation area.

As the space in the dept is limited the area is multi-purpose and are not able to offer beverages, at Newark this service is provided by volunteers but the service is not available at Kings Mill. It is difficult to compare the departments at both sites as the department at Kings Mill sees more patients than Newark (which opened in 2004).

The Superintendent would like to reassure you that your comments have been taken on board. She does feel that she and her team offer a very high standard of care but she is very sorry that you felt let down on this occasion.
