"Bad experience with my first child"

About: King George Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was 2 days over due, I went into King Georges with really bad labour pains at 4 in the morning and I told the nurses that the pains where coming and going every 5-7 minutes. She then told me to go home, and said that I had bad gas pains.

I then told her that the pain was on and off every 5 minutes, and I feel literally had to beg her to check me as I knew this wasn’t a gas pain. In what I felt was an angry manor she checked me over and I was 5 cm dilated. I was then rushed into the labour room.

Finally I gave birth to my beautiful baby boy.

That day I tried breast feeding my son, but unfortunately I hadn’t produced much milk, still tried all day, until my nipples where cracked and bleeding. My son cried all night because he was hungry because my breasts didn’t produce, I was all alone and didn’t know what to do, I was knackered myself, and had a really high temperature. I felt like none of the nurses bothered asking me what was wrong as I didn’t know anything because it was my first time, or did anything about my temperature. In the morning at about 8am, a woman who had a baby on the same day came over and asked why my son was crying all night, I told her about my milk problem, and she then told me that I should have asked the nurses. I did not know they have milk bottles, none of the nurses had told me about them.

When it came to lunch or dinner time, they made all the new mums walk all the way to the food trolley to help themselves which I thought was really careless as I’d had loads of stitches and couldn’t move a muscle. I told one of the nurses that I couldn’t walk because I was so much pain and if she could get the food for me. She said to me, “do it yourself, I’m not your slave”. I thought this was really rude so I just called my mum instead and she got me the food.

I’m really disappointed with King Georges Hospital for so many other reasons too.

I’m expecting again and I’m either opting for Queens Hospital or Whipps Cross because they are closer to me, lets just hope they do better.
