"Short falls at the Surgical Day Case Unit."

My son attended the Surgical Day Case Unit yesterday Friday 26th August. He was taken up to the unit at 07.20 with the view that his procedure would be done early. However he was left all day with no information, watching every other patient arrive and leave before him. Bearing in mind he had been nil by mouth from the previous night., 20 hours in total. His operation was eventually done at 16.00hrs. When he was told he could go home, he asked about after care, as he needed a wound to be packed daily, and was told by a nurse, with a shrug of the shoulders that he wouldn't get a district nurse out and would need to see his GP. This is 7pm on a Friday night before the bank holiday weekend. Therefore I had to find out where to take him to get his dressings changed, and luckily found a lovely sister on ward C31 who invited him up to the ward to get this done on Saturday morning. Thank goodness there are some decent staff around after all. Surely a Day Case Unit should be preparing patients to go home with the correct after care, as the whole point is to treat patients quickly and effectively, not just send them out with nothing. Shoddy treatment., which wouldn't have happened on the wards.
