I recently attended the Day Surgery for my second bunion operation.
I was more than happy to undergo the surgery again because I am convinced that the service at this hospital cannot be faulted. The atmosphere is calm and congenial, everyone was courteous and the staff showed flawless professionalism. At my initial consultation and again at my pre-op meeting I was given all the information I needed, plus concise written guidance on aftercare and what to expect at each stage. Local anaesthesia meant that I was awake throughout the procedure but able to watch the television or listen to music without being concerned by the activity beyond the screen! The op lasted about 45 minutes, After which, within an hour I was able to leave, along with painkillers, anti DVT stocking and plenty of helpful advice. This is exactly how, in a perfect world, the NHS should operate. It was easily as good as private surgery and I would highly recommend this unit to anyone.
My only fear is that a lovely small unit like this might ultimately fall to government demands for cuts - that would be a complete disaster.
This hospital offers the best NHS care I have ever come across and deserves every support to continue as an outstanding example of how things should be done. Stitches out next week - hooray!
