"Dad's care in stroke ward"

My dad suffers from multiple myloma and took a stroke ( we didn't know that at the time). The GP advised us to take him to the emergency care ward at Wishaw General. It was a Saturday and you could tell the services were stretched in emergency care and A&E was busy too. The wait times were high but when we were seen we encountered some of the best care the NHS has to offer.
Joyce in A&E was fantastic as was the doctor in the emergency care ward once dad was finally admitted. A scan was quickly arranged and he was diagnosed as having had a stroke and moved to ward 4 then ward 11 the following day. For someone who is confused and already suffering from cancer I feel the admittance process is inadequate in terms of the constant moving around and time it takes to see a medical professional.The highlight of the experience is the wonderful staff working in the hospital. Ward 11 staff were knowledgeable and answered our concerns. I felt I was leaving my dad in safe place knowing he would be cared for. Erin in particular was excellent at her job. I would say this is the best ward in the hospital (we have been round quite a few due to dads failing health) the nurses and doctors could not do enough for you, they displayed the behaviours you would expect in terms of care and compassion and you never felt for one second that you were taking up their time or that they had a million other things to do (which I'm sure they did but just didn't show it) you had their undivided attention and that's rare in hospitals these days.
Having spent a considerable amount of time in hospitals this year I can see the staff are under pressure and feel it only right to point out that the patient and family suffers when this happens. I have unfortunately experienced how hospital staff interact with patients when they don't have enough time to do the job well and also sat for many an hour waiting to be seen because the processes in the hospital do not centre around the patients needs. Ward 11 and Joyce from A&E are what makes these regular visits more palatable because they treat my dad with respect, care and dignity and I applause them for the exceptional work they do.
