About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I stayed for a week in ward 35 recently and was very upset to find that when some of the staff were on duty, Radio Wave was playing all day and all night at the Nurse's Station. It was very difficult to shut the sound out, particularly at night, in the early hours when you are feeling ill and desperate for sleep. I felt that this was very selfish of the staff involved. I also did not feel that enough attention and care was given to the dignity of the patient during such times as having a bed bath or using a bedpan. On several occasions the door was left ajar by a Health Care Assistant, leaving me feeling very vulnerable. All in all it was not a very good experience, although some of the staff were very kind and caring.

Response from Andrew Heath, Lead in Patient Experience & Engagement, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you for sharing your experience about Ward 35. I am sorry to hear you were kept awake by the music on the radio; I have spoken with the ward manager about your concerns who confirmed that music is played late afternoon sometimes for staff to have a sing along with the patients especially those suffering from dementia. They have found the music to stimulate positive interactions with patients and facilitate cognitive function via association with important events in their life.

The ward manager and the matron were not aware the music was disrupting you and would like to pass on their apologies for this. They would have turned it down or off if this had been brought to their attention. They would also like to apologise that you were unhappy with the care provided on the ward and would be grateful if you could contact a member of our Patient Relations Team directly on 01253 955588 so that we can get further details to ensure we learn from this experience. I do assure you your concerns will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Or if you would like to share your experience in confidence with an independent organisation please contact Healthwatch Blackpool on 0300 323 2100.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Heath
