"Discharge without medication required and promised at discharge."

About: Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as the patient),

I was discharged from the Scarisbick unit and during the discharge meeting the consultant decided I should receive 7 days more of the Clonazepam 0. 5mg I had been receiving as a twice daily when required dosage on the ward. After the meeting when the consultant had left I was told I couldn't have the Clonazepam because pharmacy was closed and because the Clonazepam were when required medicines they wouldn't automatically have been provided. I was told that I would have to ask the CPN, whom I was meeting Friday morning and they would have to sort it out or my GPs surgery. When I asked the CPN who had luckily been at the discharge meeting she said I should have received it from the unit and should get back in touch.

We contacted the unit all day Friday to be told Drs were in meetings etc. and then at the end of the day we were finally told that all the Drs had left and it was the community GPs responsibility. We rang the CPN again who was just leaving work at 5. 30pm who insisted I needed my discharge medicine and she rang the Scarisbrick unit. They then found a Dr who faxed the information that I was on Clonazepam to my Gps surgery around 5. 45pm. When we rang Gps surgery they said they hadn't received the fax and even if they had they would not be prepared to prescribe it for me in the community.

On Saturday morning I rang crisis team and explained the situation and they said get back in touch with the Scarisbrick unit and get them to fax details to my local hospital pharmacy. When I did this they said only a junior Dr. was on duty and they could not do this and I had been discharged and was not their responsibility. My Husband was astonished and commented in the background on his dismay at my treatment and I was told they would not be spoken to like that, even though he was not speaking to them and he was not aggressive just stating his disgust at the situation and they put the phone down on me saying a patient on the ward required their attention..

The Crisis team also rang on my behalf and they were told nothing could be done. I was becoming very ill from not having my Clonazepam for two days and had to ring 111 and ask them for help. The GP there needed evidence which luckily we could provide from the CPNs care plan discussed at the discharge meeting. I finally received my Clonazepam at 2pm today but after a big detriment to my health a lot of unnecessary anxiety and agitation which is what I am trying to recover from. Also in addition to the discharge experience my belongings had been put in plastic bags in the office and we were told my room had been cleared by night staff. I found my reading glasses were missing and also a purse with a little money in. Also various cosmetic items like shampoo etc had gone. The purse has turned up minus some of the money but the main thing I am upset about is the glasses because obviously they are expensive to replace. Apparently my CPN tells me the ward is responsible as they cleared my room. I also found a few possessions still in the bedroom thrown in with some other patients possessions. There was a bit of a compulsion of a few of the other patients to enjoy borrowing other people's clothes, glasses etc... The Scarisbrick unit does have a lot of nice staff but once you have left its definitely goodbye you are in the community again and that's that.
