I an writing to explain about the level of treatment I have recieved from the A&E Department . I arrived at 7.15 am approx after being in a RTA from the night before which happened at 8.20pm at night. I was then taken through to a nurse who gave pain killers and asked me where the pain was. Then I was asked to go to a waiting room where a nurse asked to have a word with me. They said I had whiplash and pain down my left side and recommended I went to the Pallion where I could go and see a doctor as it was open surgery. When I told them how the initial nurse had not done an examination and asked how their colleague had come to that prognosis, the staff nurse promptly examined me, saw I was in pain and asked me to sit on a bed and said I would be seen by a doctor.
Then another nurse came, examined only my back and knee and said they would have xrays done. I was then taken to xray and extensive xrays were done, I have no complaints about the staff in xray, although the arm positions were painful they were good at their job and understood I was in pain.
I was then taken back to the ward where the nurses where just sitting down and having a private conversation about their employment. a conversation I really didn't think was appropriate in ear shot of me, nor did I care for them just sitting down as if I wasn't on the ward, by the way I was the only one there in the ward when I came back to A&E.
I was then seen by the same nurse that sent me down to x ray, they came in with a leaflet on whiplash, said the x rays were fine and asked if I had pain relief at home. I explained I did not, they went and got some codeine and said I could go. I was still in extreme pain.
I was never at any point examined by a doctor or told the x rays were examined by a doctor.
When I phoned up to complain I was told by the complaints department would investigate and then I received a further callback from the sister and the telephone conversation that followed was even more revealing. The sister who phoned me back said the nurse was well trained and examined me thoroughly, but slipped up when they said the nurse examined my chest, I replied "no"
They then said they would have examined my hand grip...I replied "they did not"
They said oh well they did examine your back. I said I did not agree with them and with the level of treatment and said I should have been examined by a doctor. Having come off the phone from speaking to the sister, it left me thinking that I was right and a doctor would have carried out a better and more thorough examination and that I had not been treated correctly in A&E.
I am still in extreme pain
I am still waiting for a consultant to examine the x rays and talk to me as requested.
I believe I have not been treated with fairness and respect that everyone deserves when they have to attend A&E after an accident.
