"Poor after birth experience has left me..."

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital

I was treated at Calderdale maternity unit both before and for the birth of my child. Antenatal care was very good and there are some great midwives. I'm sad to say that the treatment I received after the birth of my daughter was just unsatisfactory and has left me devastated and damaged the initial bond I should have made with her. Immediately after her birth I was taken to surgery for stitches (was approximately 20mins). I got no skin to skin contact with my baby after her birth, they said I'd be 20mins in surgery and as soon as I was out I had five minutes in recovery then straight upto a busy labour ward. To make matters worse, a member of staff gave my baby a bottle of milk without my permission whilst I was in theatre - not only did I miss that first cuddle but I missed her first feed as well and she was given formula. Something I didn't want. I never had the chance to process any 'wonderful moment' immediately after her birth or feel any reward after her labour. It was just awful.

I received absolutely no time or help to enable me to breastfeed her, I was literally dumped on a ward when I couldn't even sit up after the surgery. It's been several months since her birth and I still cannot get over this, I am absolutely devastated. Make your birth plans clear ladies and don't let this happen to you. I feel emotionally scared from this experience and totally gutted.
