"Elderly patient kept too long in hospital"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a friend),

An elderly lady of 95 has a fall in her care home is taken to hospital to have a check and x-ray, nothing is wrong. Do they send her back - no. They tell me her mobility is poor so keep her in bed for three weeks, and now she tells me cannot walk at all. She tells me she is often dehydrated as drinks are left out of her reach, as well as the call buzzer. She tells me she feels unable to ask to go to the toilet and I have seen the common practice is to lay pads on the bed. I think this so the staff do not have to toilet the patient, they merely change the pads from time to time. So, three weeks later this lady now cannot walk, cannot take herself to the toilet, and seems to me to be confused from being dehydrated. She tells me she wants to die as she is so embarrassed by the whole saga. Her care home have said they possibly will not take her back as she cannot look after her personal hygiene. She has spent three weeks in a bed that I think should have been for someone who is ill.
