I have an ICD and during the early hours of the morning of the 9 August I had severe chest pains just under the ICD.
I attended the Accident and Emergency Department of the James Paget University Hospital at Gorleston at 7am.
Within ten minutes of being there I had had an ECG and my blood pressure and pulse were taken.
I then had a canular inserted and blood taken to be tested.
While my wife and I waited a nurse asked us if we would like any breakfast.
We both had porridge and two rounds of toast and a cup of tea – unbelievable.
The helpful consultant came to see me and said I needed a chest x-ray which was done almost immediately.
The consultant then came back and said we would have to do anther blood test to check the enzymes.
The consultant then put me on a paracetamol drip to see if the pain eased which, luckily, it did.
The consultant advised me that I had not had a heart attack.
The consultant then told us the x-ray showed I had had an hiatus hernia since 2006 which was revealed in an earlier x-ray I had in 2006 but I had never been informed of this.
I also had scar tissue on my lung (also never been told).
Every year I have a Well Man check at my Doctor’s.
I learnt more in this short time at the Accident and Emergency Department than I have received from my own doctor’s.
I was then given one week’s Lanoprazole tablets.
I only had to wait a few minutes to get these.
I have not been to Accident and Emergency for many years and the treatment I received from every one in the Department was excellent.
After all the negativity you read about in the press about the NHS, it is refreshing to be treated in such a professional manner.
