"Acupuncture appointments"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

Initially treated every 3to 4 weeks. Then became 5 to 6 weeks, now every 10 weeks. No explanation given, . asked consultant why the change, initially told 'numerous reasons'. When pushed to state "numerous reasons", was one reason, not enough staff for amount of patients taken on. Also told by consultant "patients should manage own pain control but this isn't really applicable with accupuncture, as it should be administered by a trained professional". So basically told manage pain yourself apart from the fact you can't manage it by yourself in this instance! !

Don't take on more patients at a time than you can handle then. Or train another nurse. One nurse and one clinic a week obviously doesn't cut it! Patients are not getting the treatment they need. Four treatments a year is not as frequent as required, as any practitioner can tell you. By the time the next treatment is due, the last one has worn off.

If this was any other treatment, such as dialysis, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, physiotherapy, etc, reducing the treatment to a level where it does not benefit the patient would not be allowed. Pain can be debilitating and can make people suicidal. Those taking accupuncture are usually at the end of their tether. So they should be treated with the same considerations and to the same level as any other patient.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear again,

I am sorry you are unhappy with the gap between your acupuncture appointments and the resulting level of pain control, it must be very frustrating for you. If you would like us to look into your case, please email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

In the meantime, I will pass this to the management of the service for their consideration.

Kind regards,

Eunice

Update posted by again (the patient)

Dear Eunice

Thank you for all your help and the work you put into this. However, I had it confirmed, at latest appt, that chronic patients will lose this service and it is being 'phased out'. So no amount of hard work by yourself will stop the reduction of appts for chronic patients.

Shame I had to hear it on the rumour mill, and had to ask for it to be confirmed, rather than being told up front by the pain management staff, Especially after I, and moreover my MSP, had directly asked the Dr why chronic patients were getting fewer appts per year. Rather undermines one's confidence in anything they say from now on.

Dear again,

I am sorry, I did not know either. It will be small comfort but you have added to my learning too. They say every day is a school day and my goodness, it certainly is.

In fairness, it is possible that those you asked may not have known this (like me) and I hope you don't lose confidence in us.

While this was not resolved, we did get a handle (between us) on the form you were looking for, so I do hope we helped in some way.

Best of luck with your onward pain management,

Eunice
