"Emergency appointment for PVD"

About: Royal United Hospital

Last week I spent 24 hours being sent from one hospital to another, then yet another [3 different hospitals], a round trip of 150 miles - today my symptoms worsened so instead of travelling 57 miles to the eye hospital that diagnosed my PVD, I phoned the Bath Eye Infirmary which is only 27 miles away.

This morning. I had woken with extra floaters in my eye and was worried about whether it was my recently diagnosed PVD worsening, I was very worried about whether the new floaters were a sign of a detaching retina - I was given an appointment at Bath RUH that same afternoon by a very friendly and comforting triage nurse.

I arrived at my appointment to a very busy waiting room, and amazingly although I wasn't seen exactly on time, I was seen within about 30 minutes and considering I had spent the previous Friday night in A&E for 4 hours to be told they couldn't dilate my eye, then was sent to another hospital on the Saturday waiting for over 2 hours in that hospital to be told no-one could dilate my eyes, then having to drive another 25 miles to another hospital where I spent 4 hours before PVD was diagnosed, so the 30 minute wait at Bath was brilliant.

I saw a nurse who dilated my eye, they were very friendly and comforting, then once my eyes were dilated I saw the Consultant who reassured me that my PVD hadn't progressed to a detached retina. They explained my condition really well and gave me some good advice on recognising if I need to return if my symptoms changed.

It was a great experience and should my symptoms worsen and I need to return, I feel happy and confident that I will be looked after quickly, professionally and with great empathy.

Thank you to the team at Bath Eye Infirmary RUH

We thank you for your comments about your recent care at the RUH and will forward these on to the Ophthalmology team who, we are sure, will be very grateful for your kind words.
