"Clinic E Aberdeen Royal Infirmary"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cancer Services (Medical Oncology)

(as the patient),

Three weeks ago I found a lump in my right breast and attended my GP who referred me to the Breast clinic. I was there today, I'm a nurse which I think probably has made me more anxious these last few weeks as a little knowledge can be a bad thing and make you worry more.

From the minute I entered the hospital and went for my mammogram I was treated with kindness and compassion.

The service was seamless and I went from mammogram to consultation with a consultant ( very matter of fact and bedside manner was a bit abrupt ) I then had an ultrasound of my right breast by a radiologist which was then reviewed by a consultant before a fine needle aspirate was taken from my lump for analysis.

Thankfully I am one of the lucky ones and my lump isn't anything sinister but will be removed anyway just in case.

All this was done in 3 hours, what an excellent service. Thank you to all the staff who were busy but not too busy to treat me like a human being and not just another one of many people they will have seen today.

Dear Mum of 4

Thank you so much for telling such a personal story and being so open about your experience.

You must have been through a terribly worrying time and as you say working in the NHS can make you more aware of all the things that can go wrong.

Kindness and compassion are really important and I am sure this is how you behave to your patients every day. I think getting this right can make all the difference to how patients feel. I am sorry that the Consultant’s approach was less positive. Sometimes staff don’t realise how their words and manner come across to patients. If you would like to contact me directly to talk about this I am on 01224 554400 or laura.gray2@nhs.net

I hope that your forthcoming surgery goes well and you make a good recovery.

Kind regards

Laura Gray
